Many new developments in medicine and industry require a high CPU performance with 2D/3D acceleration and layering technique. Examples for devices in medical engineering are X-ray-, therapy-, microscopy-, respiration-, LASER-, dental-, high frequency surgery- and depilation applications. Industrial applications are for example: MMI, POI, building automation, professional coffee machines, ovens and smokers, access control, time control, analyzers, vending machines, gambling machines, advertisement panels, data log and VoiceOverIP systems. For all MMIs with a display (QVGA - XGA/WXGA), controlling elements (resistive/ capacitive touch, keypad, control knob) and communication interfaces (Ethernet, USB, CAN, serial, audio, I²C, SPI, I/O), the PicoMOD7 or another member of the PicoMOD product family fits. Of course, PicoMOD7 is pin compatible to PicoMOD3/4 and PicoMOD6.
The core of the latest PicoMOD7 is a Samsung CPU with CortexA8, running on 833MHz. A highlight of this CPU is the high video performance (MPEG4/H264 decoder 720p, 2D/3D, 5 Window-Layers) and the FPU. PicoMOD7 offers 64MB (1GB opt.) Flash, 256MB RAM and signals for 3x serial, 2x USB, I²C, SPI, I/O, Audio, CAN, Ethernet, SD- and CF card signals, as well as a touch controller (4-wire resistive). All common capacitive touch controllers can be connected via I²C. Additionally, PicoMOD7 holds a flexible display interface, which is typical for F&S. Also, all common TFT displays from 320x240 to 1024x768 (XGA) can be controlled. The RGB version of PicoMOD7 holds a RGB interface, the LVDS version holds a 1-channel LVDS interface (6 bit as well as 8 bit). For connecting your display, complete display drivers are at your service, as well as a pin assignment list for the creation of own display cables/adapters. PicoMOD7 gets supplied with 3.3V, power dissipation is less than 4W. A robust 140pin connecter connects PicoMOD7 with the base board of the customer's application.
Like for every F&S board, customized OS are available for PicoMOD7. WCE6.0/R3 as well as WEC7 were customized (Bootloader, Kernel, SDK, interface drivers). Linux (uboot, BSP, interface drivers) is also available. For a quick and easy start of development, universal starter kits for Windows CE and Linux is available. One includes a PicoMOD7, a base board, cables, memory media, documentation and access to software. Additionally, display adapters for the RGB version, as well as LVDS cables and a DVI/HDMI adapter for the LVDS version can be ordered. For software development with Windows CE, Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 is necessary, but not included.
F&S also offers an inexpensive workshop for PicoMOD7. We offer a large number of additional functions, like software update via USB stick or SD card, as well as our safe file system F3S as an alternative to FAT32.
F&S' software department supports both operating systems, Windows and Linux. Windows CE6.0/R3 /WEC7 on PicoMOD7 offers bootloader, Kernel (e.g. with Silverlight, Mediaplayer or IE) and interface drivers for almost every offered interface are ready to use (access code to this software comes with the startkit). Hard work with platform builder can be dropped, we already did that for you. Take further use of your Windows know-how by creating your own software with Visual Studio .NET (not included in starterkit) in the languages C, C++, C# or VB.NET. Use interfaces like I²C the same way like a RS232 interface without having to handle the underlying hardware. Configure the display and other settings with the F&S configuration tool. This is software development at its easiest.
A Linux BSP (2.6.28, uboot, buildroot, QT. GStreamer) with display drivers (in Source Code) is available, as well as a toolchain for the development of own bootloaders, images and application software. Linux for PicoMOD7 is based on BuildRoot.
